As the Director of Finance at MorningStar Mission, you’ll do more than oversee numbers—you’ll help drive transformation. You’ll lead our finance department with purpose, aligning your work with our mission to bring hope and help to those in need. In close partnership with the Executive Director, you’ll guide the financial strategy of the organization, providing insightful analysis and clear, accurate financial reporting. You’ll also lead and support a dedicated team, delivering key financial information that empowers leadership and the Board to make wise, mission-focused decisions that shape the future of MorningStar Mission.
 

Summary of Responsibilities

As the Director of Finance, you will play a key leadership role in ensuring the financial health and long-term sustainability of MorningStar Mission. You’ll be a trusted partner to the Executive Director and Board, delivering insight-driven financial leadership with integrity and purpose.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for the Executive Director, including month-end and year-end close, and monthly income statements.

  • Present and clearly communicate critical financial information to the Executive Director and Board of Directors; offer strategic insight through forecasting and scenario planning.

  • Coordinate the annual external audit process and ensure smooth, efficient collaboration with auditors.

  • Ensure all tax filings and regulatory reports are accurate and submitted on time.

  • Lead the organization’s annual budgeting and financial planning process in partnership with the Executive Director.

  • Oversee payroll, accounts receivable and payable, and resolve any billing discrepancies.

  • Stay current with nonprofit financial management best practices, laws, and compliance standards—including thrift store certification.

  • Manage and mentor finance team staff, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and alignment with the organization’s mission.

  • Uphold MorningStar Mission’s financial stewardship and integrity, operating in accordance with ECFA guidelines and standards.

  • Maintain and manage the QuickBooks accounting system for general operations.

  • Partner with the Executive Director on risk management and insurance strategy for the organization.

Additional Details:

  • Option to work remotely up to 2 days per week.

  • Salary range: $85,000–$95,000, based on experience and qualifications.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A mature Christian leader with a heart for ministry and a strong stewardship mindset toward financial management.

  • Proven experience overseeing the finance function in a nonprofit organization, with a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in the nonprofit sector.

  • Working knowledge of and commitment to ECFA standards and GAAP principles.

  • Exceptionally detail-oriented, accurate, and organized, with a passion for excellence and integrity.

  • Solid grasp of standard accounting practices and the ability to apply them in a nonprofit ministry setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to make sound financial decisions based on Biblical principles, industry standards, and in full alignment with MorningStar Mission’s core values and purpose.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for staff and leadership across departments.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable using accounting software (QuickBooks experience a plus).


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field is required; Master’s degree preferred but not mandatory.

  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in finance/accounting, with increasing responsibility.

  • 2–4 years of supervisory experience in a nonprofit environment, including managing teams and overseeing departmental functions.
